James W. Norton

Visual artist, Cambridge, England

James has been working as a visual artist for over 25 years, producing and selling works as well as creating projects for both private and public bodies. Recently he has been working with Filmpoem, the British Museum, the Archbishops Palace and Florence Arts Centre. James explores the transitions between places, where speculative narratives create new territories. He creates works in paint, collage, film, audio, found material and site-specific installations.

Between city and countryside is a Non Place, a space where multi-layered traces of meaning can exist at anyone time. This topographical terrain engenders new navigational techniques to explore and record it. Landscape plays a pivotal role in my artwork. I am drawn to the spaces in-between spaces, liminality, the periphery, the edge and what lies unseen outside the edge, this Non Place.
